Poet, short story writer and member of the famed Algonquin Roundtable, today Dorothy Parker is known as one of the funniest, wittiest and most cutting observers of the human condition. She was also known for her sexual liberation and willingness to talk about any subject, regardless of the company she was in. Dorothy Parker has been immortalized in song and letter and has innumerable societies and fan clubs devoted to her. Before there was Bette Midler, before there was Kathy Griffin, before there was Madonna, there was Dorothy Parker.

Below is a full documentary entitled “The Ten Year Lunch” about the members of the Algonquin roundtable.
One of the great wits; my favourite 4-liner of hers is ‘You might as well live’:
Guns ain’t lawful
Nooses give
Gas smells awful
You might as well live
A brilliant woman

It’s so amazing that she is known for her sexual liberation and willingness to discuss any topic no matter who she was with and so many people love her for it yet these same people view anyone today who does the same, is sexually liberated and open to any discussion, as lacking boundaries and crass.

Interesting film, – I like the way the people and personalities were grounded in historical and social context. Great views of Harpo Marx too! Thank you for sharing. 🙂
