The Haruki Murakami Playlist

MURAKAMI PLAYLIST50 Songs from Haruki Murakami’s Novels

Many of Haruki Murakami’s novels, including Norwegian Wood, Dance Dance Dance, and South of the Border, West of the Sun — get their titles from songs, and his characters are constantly referencing and reflecting on the music in his work. Murakami, who owned a Tokyo jazz club before turning to writing full time, puts the number of musical references in his novels at two hundred and fifty and says that he thinks he has over 10,000 records, but he is afraid to count.

The music in Haruki Murakami’s books is integral to the story and to the overall ethos of his writing. Below is a Spotify playlist of 50 of the pop and jazz  references found in his work.
